I recently wrote about how a ghostwriter can make an income of at least six figures. Read it here. The first point I made was to a assemble a team. I recommended including a search engine optimization (SEO) company as part of the team.
I had been using a web designer friend to manage my website’s SEO, and I had landed a couple of jobs, netting me some additional income. In early 2023, unhappy with him making me do more of the SEO work than I wanted (or knew how to) and not wanting to pay someone who wasn’t an SEO professional, I made the choice to invest some of that money in an SEO company whose owner was in my networking/coaching group.
I had enough money to give them one year to get me one book ghostwriting job, and the owner expressed confidence his team would succeed. They ultimately did, but it was a long road.
First, the team needed to adjust to my exacting writing demands. I had written my website copy and wanted them to simulate it, but at first I found their text too simple and amateurish, not up to my standards or the standards of people I wanted for clients. It took three months before I was satisfied.
In the meantime, my SEO company wanted me to give them a five-star rating. I refused, giving only four stars. When the owner asked me why, I told them it was because they didn’t figure out the writing fast enough. He pledged to earn my five-star rating.
He and his team had nine months to find that one job. We had monthly meetings because I demanded accountability, something I wasn’t getting from my friend. I wanted to see how the keywords’ rankings increased because it’s commonly known that most people never look past page one.
In month eleven, with no lead yet, the owner expressed a little bit of worry. But it wasn’t long before that one job came in—except it was deferred to month thirteen. Still, I had saved up enough money to pay for two additional months.
I ended up not needing those months because in the twelfth month, I closed my first book ghostwriting deal that came directly from the SEO work. Success!
Since then, I have closed four other books deals, several speeches, and three other book leads look promising in the first quarter of 2026.
I have since given the company the five-star rating they wanted.
That’s my story in summary. Here are some reasons why ghostwriters should consider investing in an SEO company:
1. Keyword expertise. SEO companies have in-depth keyword data that help ghostwriters target high-value, high-intent search terms. I paid for seventy-five keywords, but the only ones I knew I wanted were “ghostwriter” and some cities. I had no idea which cities, and the SEO company did research to find the right ones.
So far, I’ve had jobs in Los Angeles and vicinity, Boston, New York and vicinity, Miami, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, plus leads in Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Dallas, Austin, Phoenix, Kansas City, and St. Louis.
My SEO company also knew that “professional ghostwriter,” ghostwriter services,” “ghostwriting services”, “speech writing services” also would hit. I never would have known that.
2. Higher-ranking content. Collaborating with an SEO company has helped me stay higher in the rankings, except for those times Google made changes to its algorithm. But that’s okay because my SEO team is on top of that and gets me back on page one faster. Before, I would fall off page one and not come back.
3. A consistent strategy. SEO companies ensure what a ghostwriter produces aligns with the ghostwriter’s broader goals. I want to grow my business every year, and I have been able to because I meet monthly with the team to go over my goals and what they’re doing to help me reach them.
For example, I want more book ghostwriting clients, so they suggested I write weekly blog posts about ghostwriting. I wrote posts of at least six hundred words. Then they suggested that posts of one thousand words or more would do better, so now I’m doing that.
4. Improved writing efficiency. With SEO guidance, ghostwriters spend less time guessing and revising, resulting in faster turnaround times. In line with consistent strategy, I now know I have to find a ghostwriting idea to write about and post every week, and that actually saves me time because I have a focus.
5. Stronger professional credibility. My SEO company has told me that these thousand-word posts help my rankings because they are fresh, real, and researched. This raises my credibility in the eyes of search engines, and my authority is better established.
Whenever I get a lead, I always ask how they found me. Just about everybody I now talk said they read my website and responded to what I wrote. That’s SEO!
We still hold monthly meetings, where I fill them in on what became of the leads, and they tell me how my keywords are ranking. At the December 2025 meeting, I randomly searched “ghostwriter New York” and “ghostwriter Los Angeles” and found myself on page one of both searches. I was floored.
Not only that, but I also have seen my name listed in AI overviews. Very promising.
I realize that just because I’m ranked high doesn’t mean the jobs will come rolling in. I can’t make people reach out to me, and if they do, I still have to do my part to close the deal. A lot can go wrong: The prospect doesn’t have the money, doesn’t recognize the value I bring (or I do a bad job of conveying that), doesn’t think we’ll mesh together well, isn’t impressed by my writing examples or experience, or gets cold feet.
Similarly, I might turn someone down because the story doesn’t interest me, the prospect will be too high maintenance or too demanding or too much of a control freak, and doesn’t appear to share the same enthusiasm for the project as I do.
All I need is three or four book projects a year, hire a ghostwriter like me to help you achieve your writing goals . The SEO company is getting me enough leads that I can closing enough to meet my goals. I recommend ghostwriters consider hiring an SEO company.
